Republicans are working to destroy democracy across the country. When Democrats criticize them, they point out New York has some of the worst run elections in the country. What they ignore is that many of us agree. While the right to vote is being trampled by Republicans throughout the country, we can and must be a beacon for fair and efficient elections. The days of machine run elections that seek to reduce participation must end. In 2020, weeks went by without knowing the results of our elections. Had the election for President been close, we would have rightly been the laughing stock of the country. We’re going to change that.
What We’ve Accomplished
We passed landmark voting rights legislation in 2019 and 2020. New York finally has early voting. Automatic voter registration and same day registration are now the law of the land in New York State and we consolidated State and Federal primaries. Thanks to my bill, we expanded mail voting in 2020 and we must make it permanent.
Where We Need to Go
Election administration and laws in New York need a complete overhaul. Early votes of all kinds must be processed early and securely so that we know vote tallies on election night. We must pass legislation that makes mail voting simple and not overly burdensome with rules that disqualify thousands of ballots. We must reform our election laws so that we do not have thousands of ballots challenged on technicalities. And we must restructure the Board of Elections so that it is filled with independent, qualified people, administering our elections fairly.
