I work to be an ally of gay, trans, nonbinary, and intersex New Yorkers. We have come so far in New York and have so much more to do in order to make New York a truly inclusive state that treats every person in the state equitably and with dignity.
What We’ve Accomplished
I am incredibly proud that we passed and enacted GENDA in 2019, which added gender identity and gender expression to New York’s Civil Rights Laws. We also banned conversion therapy in New York. We eliminated the gay panic defense. We also repealed the Walking While Trans Ban this year which criminalized loitering.
Where We Need to Go
As long as our LGBTQ friends face higher rates of violence and discrimination in society, our work as not done. We must make educational settings safe for trans kids and root out societal discrimination wherever we see it. We must establish the suicide prevention task force and phone line, as we lose too many LGBTQ youth to suicide every year.
