Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights. New York State should be on the forefront of women’s issues. We must protect reproductive rights; ensure access to affordable health care, child care, and elder care; and stand against any type of abuse and assault, including sexual harassment and domestic violence. We must expand paid sick leave and work toward pay equity for all women. And we must protect trans women from violence.
What We’ve Accomplished
We passed the Equal Pay Act, which requires that employers pay equally for “substantially similar work,” and not just equal work. We passed the Reproductive Health Act which finally codified Roe v. Wade in New York State and ensured access to safe reproductive health care for women. We passed my bill that allows people who are experiencing intimate partner violence to break a residential lease without punishment. We passed the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act, requiring all forms of birth control be provided without copay. In 2019, we passed the BOSS bill, which ensures that women will be able to make personal decisions about their reproductive healthcare without fear of discrimination from their employers.
Where We Need to Go
We must end the disparities in Black maternal mortality and make delivering safe for all women. This year, I am pushed for us to pass a bill allowing taxpayers to make a gift to the abortion access fund on their personal income tax returns, so that all women can afford to make reproductive health choices for themselves, regardless of their ability to pay. We must invest in getting women – who lost the majority of jobs during the COVID economic crisis – back into the workforce.
